The Electromagnetically Spinning Viscometer
(EMS viscometer) is a rotational viscometer.
This new type of viscometer
-
is suitable to measure fluids with viscosities in the range of 0.1 to 1,000,000 mPa·s.
-
can automatically evaluate the temperature dependency of the viscosity in the range of 0 … 200°C within a very short time.
-
is capable of performing determinations of the rheological behaviour of liquids by determining the share rate dependency of the viscosity.
-
provides a better absolute accuracy and repeatability of the results than classical Rotational Viscometers.
The EMS Viscometer measures the viscosity of liquids through observation of the rotation of a sphere which is driven by electromagnetic interaction.
The EMS technology distinguishes itself from other rotational viscometers by three main characteristics:
-
All parts of the viscometer which come in direct contact with the sample are disposable and inexpensive.
-
The measurements are performed in a sealed sample vessel.
-
The system requires only very small sample quantities from 90 µL.
Reasons why we recommend
An aluminium sphere probe which rotates in an enclosed small glass tube – the EMS technology offers many substantial benefits compared to other Rotational and Capillary Viscometers.
1. Monitoring viscosity behavior in small volume
2. No cleaning is required
-
Monitoring viscosity with slow shear rate in small sample volume.
-
Useful to evaluate interactions between molecules when product design is considered.
-
Free from contamination by non-direct contact measurement and no cleaning steps is required after testing.
-
Safety for operator when volatility and harmful smell sample are measured.
3. Wide temp. range
4. Usability
-
Temp. range: 0 to 200 °C
-
Temp. stability: ±0.1 °C
-
Heating rate: within 10 mins from 25 -to 200 °C
-
A special program mode facilitates easy and fast studies of the temperature dependency of the viscosity.
-
Sample volume required: 300 micro (standard) or 90 micro liter (option)
-
Samples are reusable for other analysis by using clean disposable containers when precious samples are measured.
-
Disposable container with sealing cap is very useful when volatile or strong smelling sample is measured.
5. Short measuring time
6. Auto graph display
-
Only one second is required to measure samples with a viscosity below 100 mPa·s
-
Approx. one minute is enough to measure samples with viscosity of 10,000 mPa·s
-
Real-time plot during measurement for viscosity vs meas.time, elapsed time, temperature, motor rotation speed (rpm) and shear rate.
-
Easy to export data to your PC with CSV or for spread sheets
Only 4 steps to use EMS viscometer
-
Introduce a sphere probe and sample into the disposable container
-
Screw cap and seal on the disposable cup
-
Set the cup to instrument
-
Press start to measure and result shows automatically

Comments from customers
-
The system relieve operators from conventional and troublesome cleaning treatment by using disposable containers.
-
Easy operation for all operators like ease of parameter setting.
-
Short measurement time with small volume sample from 300 µL (option)
-
The system is able to minimize sample consumption volume by using the optional small container when sample is precious.
-
Disposable container with sealing adopted in this system is very effective to prevent reaction with air by replacement of the container's internal air with nitrogen, especially when Anaerobic sample is measured.
-
Viscosity of samples can be measured in a few seconds when low viscosity samples like olive oil are measured.
FAQ - Technology -
1. Is it possible to measure viscoelasticity ?
2. How is the shear rate calculated ?
Not possible. EMS can only measure absolute viscosity. Unlike other technologies to measure viscosity, EMS can measure a small amount of sample at a low shear rate, so it is possible to measure the small state of the sample at the molecular level, which was very difficult in the past.
The shear rate can be calculated by the following formula.
Shear rate = 3π× Number of probe rotation per second [rpm]/60

3. What samples are suitable to measure by EMS viscometer ?
4. What samples are not suitable to measure by EMS viscometer ?
-
Liquid pharmaceutical samples
-
Ink products
-
Petroleum products
-
Protein liquid sample
-
Food oil
-
Thermosetting resin
-
Viscoelastic sample
-
Sample with yield value
-
Sample containing particles (interferes with rotation)
-
Non-uniform sample
5. Is EMS method complying with some international standards ?
6. We are using Brookfield viscometer. Is the measurement result by EMS viscometer the equal with Brookfield ?
No, EMS method is not complying with any international standards.
Because the viscometer is generally used in Research and development departments, and it does not require compliance with international standards.
The measurement results by EMS viscometer is not generally be the equal with results by Brookfield. Because the measurement principle between these methods is different. However, depending on the sample, the behavior may be the correalation, in which case it is possible for the customer to convert it by themselves and adjust with the expected value.
